How to Read a Football Bet Slip Step by Step

By Chidi Okoro · Updated 2026-07-10 · 7 min read

A plain language walkthrough of every line on a football bet slip, from selection and odds to stake and potential return, so you know exactly what you are confirming before you tap place bet.

Most new bettors lose their first few naira not because they picked the wrong team, but because they misread their own bet slip. Knowing exactly what each line means before you confirm a bet is the single easiest way to avoid an expensive mistake.

The selection line

This is the outcome you are backing, shown exactly as the sportsbook labels it. A selection like "Arsenal to win" is different from "Arsenal or Draw" (a double chance bet), even though they sound similar. Always read the full selection text, not just the team name, before moving on.

The odds

Next to your selection sits a number, almost always in decimal format on Nigerian sportsbooks, such as 1.80 or 2.35. This number tells you your total return per naira staked if the bet wins, including your stake back. Odds of 1.80 mean a 1,000 naira stake returns 1,800 naira: 800 naira profit plus your original 1,000 naira.

The stake field

This is the amount you are risking, and it is the only number on the slip you actively type in. Get into the habit of typing your stake last, after you have checked the selection and odds, so a rushed tap does not lock in the wrong amount.

Potential returns

Most slips calculate this automatically as you enter your stake. Treat this figure as a ceiling, not a promise. It assumes every selection on the slip wins exactly as listed, with no voids, no rule changes, and no price movement after you confirm.

Multiple selections and bet type

If you have added more than one match, check the bet type field carefully. "Accumulator" or "multiple" means every leg must win. Some sportsbooks also offer system bets, where a set number of legs out of the total need to win. Confirm which one you are placing before you submit, since the potential return changes significantly between types.

Before you confirm

Read the slip once from top to bottom: selection, odds, stake, bet type, potential return. This takes ten seconds and catches the vast majority of slip errors, from an accidental double selection to a stake with an extra zero.
