Sportsbook Bonuses: Reading the Fine Print Before You Chase the Headline Offer

By Amaka Eze · Updated 2026-07-14 · 7 min read

A large welcome bonus headline rarely tells the full story. Here's what actually determines whether a bonus is worth claiming, and the terms that catch new bettors most often.

A bonus headline is designed to be the most attractive number on the page, and it usually is. What it isn't designed to do is explain the conditions attached to actually withdrawing money connected to that bonus. Those conditions, not the headline figure, determine whether a bonus is worth anything in practice.

The number that actually matters: wagering requirements

A wagering requirement is the number of times you must stake the bonus amount, sometimes the bonus plus your deposit, before related winnings become withdrawable. A bonus with an 8x wagering requirement demands significantly more total betting turnover than one at 3x, even if the headline bonus amount looks identical.

Odds restrictions hide in the same paragraph

Many bonus terms only count bets above a minimum odds threshold, often around 1.50 or higher, toward the wagering requirement. A string of safe, low-odds bets that would normally suit a cautious bettor may not count toward clearing the bonus at all, which pushes bettors toward higher-odds bets than they'd otherwise choose, purely to satisfy the terms.

Time limits change the maths again

A bonus that expires in 7 days requires a very different betting pace than one valid for 30 days. A tight deadline paired with a high wagering requirement often means the realistic path to clearing it involves betting faster and larger than you'd normally choose, which is worth weighing against the size of the bonus itself.

Maximum bet size while clearing a bonus

Some operators cap the maximum stake per bet while a bonus is active, and a single bet that exceeds it can void the entire bonus, not just that one wager. This detail is easy to miss and expensive to trigger by accident.

A simple checklist before claiming any bonus

Before accepting a welcome offer, find the wagering requirement multiple, the minimum odds per qualifying bet, the expiry window, and any maximum stake limit. If any of those four terms are unclear or hard to find on the operator's site, that's worth treating as information in itself.

The bigger picture

A bonus is a marketing tool, not free money, and the sportsbooks that make their terms easy to find and genuinely fair to clear are also usually the ones worth comparing first on licensing and payout speed. Our sportsbook reviews cover exactly that comparison, operator by operator.
