Flat Staking Versus Percentage Staking: A Full Comparison

By Amaka Eze · Updated 2026-07-10 · 8 min read

A direct comparison of two common staking approaches, flat staking and percentage staking, with worked naira examples showing how each behaves during a losing streak.

How much you stake on each bet matters at least as much as which bets you choose. Two of the most common approaches, flat staking and percentage staking, produce noticeably different results over a long losing or winning run.

Flat staking explained

With flat staking, you bet the same fixed amount every time, regardless of your current bankroll. If your unit is 1,000 naira, every bet is 1,000 naira, whether your bankroll has grown to 50,000 naira or shrunk to 8,000 naira.

Percentage staking explained

With percentage staking, you bet a fixed percentage of your current bankroll on every bet, commonly between 1 and 3 percent. As your bankroll grows, your stakes grow with it. As your bankroll shrinks, your stakes shrink too, which naturally slows your losses during a bad run.

How they behave during a losing streak

Say you start with a 20,000 naira bankroll and stake 2 percent per bet. After five straight losses, percentage staking has you betting smaller and smaller amounts each time, cushioning the damage. With flat staking at a fixed 1,000 naira, you keep betting the same amount regardless, which can eat into your bankroll faster during an extended cold run.

How they behave during a winning streak

Percentage staking compounds your stakes upward as your bankroll grows, which can accelerate gains during a hot run but also means a later losing streak costs you more in absolute naira terms, since your bankroll and stakes are both larger by then.

Which one suits beginners

Flat staking is easier to track and understand, which matters when you are still building the discipline to record every bet honestly. Percentage staking is mathematically more protective long term, but only if you recalculate your stake size regularly rather than letting it drift.

A practical middle ground

Many experienced bettors use flat staking but recalculate their unit size monthly based on their current bankroll, getting some of the protective benefit of percentage staking without recalculating before every single bet.
